Samuel 11: David and Bathsheba
1.
Describe how David and Bathsheba came to commit adultery.
2.
Vs. 1: It seems that the author is saying that King David should have
been where? An old Chinese proverb says that “Too much comfort provides
opportunity for promiscuity.” Does this proverb describe King David at
this time?
3.
Is there any hint in Scripture that Bathsheba tried to resist David and
not sin? Whatever the case, who was responsible for this? Vs. 3: How
do we know that David committed this sin with a high hand? Note:
Before this story is over, David will have broken no fewer than four of
the Ten Commandments: Nos. 6, 7, 9 and 10.
4.
Show how Achan’s sin and confession compares with David’s sin; see
Joshua 7:20-21: “…I s_____, and I c________, and t_____...” Today,
when we are tempted, do we not often follow this same sequence of
events, as we stumble, sin and leave God? In your own mind, consider
your past sins, whether you sinned like David and Achan.
5.
Why did the Biblical writer explicitly say that Bathsheba had just
finished her period?
6.
Under the Law of Moses, what was the punishment for adultery (see
Leviticus 20:10; Deuteronomy 22:22)? Consequently, what should have
happened to both David and Bathsheba? Up to this point in the story,
how many sins has David committed?
7.
Explain how David tried to cover up his sin.
8.
Who was Bathsheba’s husband? To what ethnic group did he belong? What
was his job?
9.
Uriah was “too good” a person, and unknowingly he frustrated King
David’s scheme. Please explain.
10.
In the end, how did King David solve his problem? In the process, which
of the Ten Commandments did David break?
11. I
cannot prove this, but I think Joab was not happy with what David had
him do. He had to obey the king however. In order to express in an
indirect manner his dissatisfaction with the king, what did he tell the
messenger to say to King David?
12.
When did Bathsheba become David’s wife and enter the palace? Bathsheba
gave birth to a son, however, “the thing that David had done
d___________ the LORD” (2 Samuel 12:1 in NRSV). [Note: This verse is
the last verse of 2 Samuel 11 in the Chinese Union Version and some
other versions, but in the NRSV it is the first verse of chapter 12.]
13.
Up to this point, from what we have read and seen, and from what we
know, has David exhibited any remorse yet?
