Is the Purpose of Christianity Only to Comfort People?<\/p>\n

Some people believe that that purpose of Christianity is to comfort people, to give them a crutch on which to lean as they face the problems of life.<\/p>\n

In fact, Jesus said, \u201cCome to me, all who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest\u201d (Matthew 11:28, NIV). Other statements in the New Testament also indicate that Jesus wants to impart rest and peace to his followers.<\/p>\n

However, on at least two occasions Jesus drove from the temple in Jerusalem people he saw misusing that holy place. Did those people receive comfort? Another time, a rich man asked Jesus what he should do to inherit eternal life. The answer was not comforting (see Mark 10:17-31).<\/p>\n

The message of the Bible frequently is that unless one changes his way of living he cannot enter the kingdom of heaven. \u201cTake up your cross and follow me,\u201d Jesus said (Matthew 16:24).<\/p>\n

Is Jesus Christ my crutch? No! Jesus is my life. Christianity is my philosophy of life, it guides my view of the home and my view of death. It is the sphere in which I live; it is my faith system; it is my all. When I suffer, Jesus feels my pain. When I\u2019m joyful, Jesus is joyful as well. When I fail, Jesus comforts me; when I\u2019m successful, Jesus applauds and shares the glory. When I sin, Jesus reminds me to repent and holds out his hands to receive me back. When I share Jesus with others, he too is there, ready to welcome that person as well.<\/p>\n
