What Does \u201cAmen\u201d Mean?<\/p>\n

Christians usually end their prayers with \u201cAmen,\u201d and thus see it to mean that their prayer is finished. In fact, however, our meaning should be that we agree with this prayer and I hope God will bring about the things mentioned in it.<\/p>\n

Below are ways \u201cAmen\u201d is used in the Bible:<\/p>\n

1) 1 Chronicles 16:36: \u201cPraise be to the LORD, the God of Israel, from everlasting to everlasting. Then all the people said \u2018Amen\u2019 and \u2018Praise the LORD.\u2019\u201d Worship in Israel included saying \u201cAmen.\u201d<\/p>\n

2) 1 Kings 1:36: \u201cBenaiah son of Jehoiada answered the king, \u2018Amen! May the LORD, the God of my lord the king, so declare it.\u2019\u201d Benaiah wanted God to bring King David\u2019s plan to completion. Amen.\u201d Here the author of Hebrews prayers for the reader; \u201cAmen\u201d means \u201cMay God bring about my prayer.\u201d When people are together and someone prays, if \u201cAmen\u201d is said at the end, it is an expression that: This person\u2019s prayer is also my prayer; his petitions are my petitions and his expressions of thanksgiving are also said by me. His prayer represents my heart. If you do not agree with what was stated in the prayer, or if you do not understand it, you should not say \u201cAmen.\u201d<\/p>\n

8) John 10:7: \u201cTherefore Jesus said again, \u201cVery truly I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep.\u201d The Greek for \u201cvery truly\u201d in this passage is \u201camen, amen.\u201d Here it means that this is a solemn and truthful statement.<\/p>\n

9) Revelation 3:14: \u201cTo the angel of the church in Laodicea write: These are the words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the ruler of God\u2019s creation.\u201d Here \u201cAmen\u201d refers to Jesus and God. As Jesus is always truthful, so we\u2014his disciples\u2014should be people of truth.<\/p>\n
