2 Samuel 2: David is Anointed King of Judah<\/p>\n

1. Why did David inquire of God: \u201cShall I go up into any of the cities of Judah?\u201d (NRSV) David knew that he was to become the king of Judah, however he could not assume that the people in Judah would make him king, so he asked to know God\u2019s will in the matter.<\/p>\n

2. Where did God tell David to go? Find this place on a Bible map.<\/p>\n

3. David was anointed k___ in Hebron by the people of Judah. This is the second time that David has been anointed; when was the first time? Why did David\u2019s kingship begin in Hebron?<\/p>\n

4. Why does the Bible refer to this territory as \u201cJudah\u201d and the \u201chouse of Judah,\u201d but is not called the \u201cnation of Judah\u201d? (Because the entire country of Israel has not yet divided into \u201cnorth,\u201d and \u201csouth,\u201d \u201cIsrael\u201d and \u201cJudah.\u201d It is very clear, however, that the people have already begun to refer to the two areas of their country in these ways; see vs. 10-11.) Note: Sometimes the term \u201cIsrael\u201d refers to the entire nation, but sometimes it refers only to the north section. The term \u201cJudah\u201d sometimes refers to the entire nation, but sometimes it refers only to the southern portion.<\/p>\n

5. Vs. 4-7: Explain the logic behind what David said to the people of Jabesh-gilead. If David is able to convince the people of Jabesh-gilead to support his kingship, what influence would it have on people in other towns and cities?<\/p>\n

6. Vs. 8-9: \u201cBut A___ son of N___, commander of Saul’s army, had taken I___ son of Saul, and brought him over to Mahanaim. He made him king over Gilead, the Ashurites, Jezreel, Ephraim, Benjamin, and over all Israel\u201d (NRSV). [Ishbaal in some other translations is \u201cIsh-Bosheth.\u201d] From this we know that it was not easy for David to become king of the whole country of Israel. Abner wanted power. (Remember the names of these people.)<\/p>\n

7. How long was Ishbaal king of Israel? \u201cDavid was king in Hebron over the house of Judah was s______ years and six months\u201d (NRSV). Note: Although God had already planned for David to become the king of all of Israel and Judah, David had to wait for the time to be right before he could receive the crown. David learned to wait on the Lord. Do you and I wait on the<\/p>\n

10. Vs. 14-17: The men of Ishbaal\u2019s commander Abner opposed the men of David\u2019s Joab. They picked representatives and did what? Twelve men vs. twelve men, and how many died?<\/p>\n

11. Vs. 17: Twelve fought twelve, but the verdict was indecisive. What did the men do then? \u201cThe battle was very fierce that day; and Abner and the men of Israel were b___ by the servants of David\u201d (NRSV).<\/p>\n

13. Even though Abner did not support David, he made a very wise statement nonetheless, a statement worth our memorizing: \u201cIs the sword to keep d___ forever? Do you not know that the end will be b___? How long will it be before you order your people to turn from the pursuit of their k___?\u201d (NRSV). Apply this verse to Christians today: Do we use our tongues to harm, slander and kill?<\/p>\n
