1. Who is Ziba? What did Ziba bring David to ingratiate himself to David? Why do you think Ziba did this? Was he sincere? Did David trust him?<\/p>\n

2. Consider from two different angles David\u2019s reaction to Ziba. (1) Whose descendent was Mephibosheth? Because of this, perhaps Mephibosheth had reason to support Absalom. Why? If this is the case, then Ziba wanted to express support for David. (2) However, it is also possible that Ziba took advantage of this opportunity to smear Mephibosheth\u2019s name before David. Did David believe (1) or (2)? Which do you think is correct? (1) or (2)? (This story will be continued in 2 Samuel chapter 19.)<\/p>\n

3. How did David reward Ziba?<\/p>\n

4. Who is Shimei? How did Shimei treat David, and what did he say to David?<\/p>\n

5. Who is Abishai the son of Zeruiah? Abishai asked the king the same question that you and I want to ask him: Why does the king allow this man to curse you? How did David reply? What about David\u2019s character do we learn from this? However, we can imagine that this is not the final word we will hear about this incident! (See 2 Samuel 19 and 1 Kings 2.)<\/p>\n

6. Vs. 10: What did David mean when he said, \u201cWhat have I to do with you, you sons of Zeruiah?\u201d In what other passage in the Bible did David make this same remark?<\/p>\n

7. Where did Absalom go? Who was with him?<\/p>\n

8. Whose presence did Absalom question? What did he say to make Absalom believe him? We know, however, that he was there for what purpose?<\/p>\n

9. Vs. 20-22: What did Ahithophel recommend the first time he gave Absalom advice? Perhaps Ahithophel did not realize that his counsel fulfilled what Nathan the prophet told David would happen, which was what? (See 2 Samuel 12:11-12.) Note: In that day, society put a lot of emphasis on the person to whom the concubines of a former king were given after the king died or was deposed. Possession of the concubines strengthened one\u2019s claim to the throne.<\/p>\n

10. Ahithophel obviously was a very wise person, so whenever he spoke, gave counsel, etc, it was as if who had spoken?<\/p>\n

1. What strategy did Ahithophel suggest to kill David and usurp the throne?<\/p>\n

2. What did Absalom and the elders think of Ahithophel\u2019s plan?<\/p>\n

13. When we read how King Saul chased David in 1 Samuel, we thought how unnecessary it was, but we understood that King Saul envied David and thus treated him thusly. We could, therefore, accept it. But now, we see a son chasing his father, wanting to snatch the throne and usurp the kingdom, and it is very difficult for me, a 21st century American, to accept. Since Chinese history also includes instances where a son usurped his father\u2019s throne, perhaps it is easier for Easterners to accept. (For example, during the Spring-Autumn period, in the State of Chu, Mu Xiangchen killed his father and usurped the throne. Sui Yang Di did the same thing during the Sui Dynasty, as did Liu Shao about A.D. 424.) Whatever the case, this situation fulfills what the prophet Nathan said, \u201c\u2026the sword shall never depart from your house\u2026 Thus says the Lord, I will raise up trouble against you from within your own house\u2026\u201d [NRSV]. What do you think about all of this? What do you learn from this?<\/p>\n
