Joshua/05: Joshua Says Goodbye
Joshua chapters 23-24

1. Joshua 23: Joshua’s Farewell: The elderly Joshua assembled the Israelites to tell them what was on his heart, things he considered of great importance, as follows: Vs. 2-3: That the Israelites could subdue the land of Canaan as their inheritance was entirely because of (whose) doing? Vs. 4: Joshua allotted the land for each t___. Vs. 5: G___ himself will drive the peoples out of Canaan. Vs. 6: “Be very strong; be careful to o___ a___ that is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, without t___ aside to the right or to the left.” What is the “Book of the Law of Moses”? (The five books of Moses: Genesis, Exodus, etc.) Vs. 7-8: “Do not associate with these nations that remain among you; do not invoke the names of their g___ or s___ by them. You must not ___ them or bow down to them.8 But you are to hold fast to the L___ your God, as you have until now.” Vs. 12-13: What will be the result if the Israelites associate with the groups who remain, if they intermarry or ally themselves with them? Vs. 14: Joshua says that he must soon d___. Joshua emphasizes a very important fact: “You know with all your heart and soul that not one of all the good promises the LORD your God gave you has f___. Every promise has been ___; not one has failed.” Vs. 15-16: Once again Joshua declares that God not only is able to bless the Israelites and enable them to enter and subdue Canaan, God is also able to (curse or punish) those who disobey him and cause them to leave Canaan. “15 But just as every good p___ of the LORD your God has come true, so the LORD will bring on you all the evil he has threatened, until he has d___ you from this good land he has given you. 16 If you violate the covenant of the LORD your God, which he commanded you, and go and serve other gods and bow down to them, the LORD’S anger will burn against you, and you will quickly p___ from the good land he has given you.”

2.Joshua 24: Joshua Depicts God’s Grace: Joshua 24:1-13: Joshua called together the leaders of each Israelite tribe and reviewed with them everything that God had done for the nation of Israel. They assembled in S___, very near the place they had assembled years before (see Joshua 8:30-35). They stood in (whose) presence? List all the people and events that Joshua mentioned, beginning with Terah, Abraham and Nahor. Vs. 12: The Israelites could subdue Canaan was because (who) fought for them? Verse thirteen should cause all leaders and other people to make a critical self-evaluation: “So I gave you a l___ on which you did n___ toil and c___ you did not b___; and you live in them and eat from vineyards and olive groves that you did n___ plant.” How would you apply these words to yourself? Joshua 24:14-28: The challenge that Joshua gave to Israel (vs. 14-15) is one of the most famous passages in the book of Joshua; please memorize these verses: “14 “Now f___ the LORD and s___ him with all faithfulness. T___ a___ the gods your forefathers worshiped beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the LORD. 15 But if serving the LORD seems u___ to you, then c___ for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your forefathers served beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for m___ and m___ h___, we will serve the LORD.” Will you and I make this statement the motto or proclamation of religious faith for ourselves and our families? Vs. 16-18: How did the people respond? Vs. 19: Why did Joshua say, “You are not able to serve the LORD”? Vs. 19-22: Who became the witness for the assembly? Vs. 23-24: What did Joshua still fear? Vs. 25: Once again Joshua made a c___ with the people. Why? Vs. 26-28: Joshua put a large s___ and set it near God’s holy place and said that it had heard all the commandments that God had given the Israelites. “It will be a w___ against you if you are u___ to your God.” Joshua 24:29-33: How old did Joshua live to be? Note how the Bible assesses Joshua for the influence that he had on the Israelites. Anyone who serves as a leader of God’s people would like for this to be said about them, as follows: “Israel s___ the LORD throughout the lifetime of Joshua and of the elders who outlived him and who had experienced everything the LORD had done for Israel.” [The Putonghua or Easy-to-Read Chinese translation (© World Bible Translation Center) is also given.] Why did they bury the bones of Joseph in Shechem? (See Genesis 33:19, 50:25 and Exodus 13:19). Write your own opinion of Joshua. If you are a Christian, do you want to influence the next generation? How do you want to influence them? Influence them to do what? Do you hope to influence the next generation to be closer to God and to serve God? What kind of an example is Joshua for you?
