基督徒時常說這樣的話：“張三不屬靈。”“李四很屬靈。”“屬靈的基督徒很容易明白某某《聖經》的經文。”“非基督徒，因為不屬靈，所以很難明白《聖經》里的許多真理。”
“屬靈”到底是什麼意思？
首先，請我們注意在日常生活上怎麼用“屬”這個字和“屬於”一詞。“我屬猴”指我是出生於十二屬相的哪個。“這支毛筆屬於我，”意思是這是我的毛筆。孩子玩玩時，一個對一個說，“我屬這國；你屬那國”。丈夫向人介紹老婆時，他說“我屬於她！”——我們都明白也覺得很有意思，不是嗎？
《聖經》用“屬靈”這個詞用不少次，所以讀一讀一些經文會幫助我們明白這個詞的意思。保羅告訴在羅馬的基督徒說：“因為我切切地想見你們，要把些屬靈的恩賜分給你們…”（羅馬書1:11）。意思是保羅要讓當地的基督徒得到一些聖靈所賜給的恩賜。
寫信給哥林多城的基督徒時，保羅有一點責備他們，告訴他們說在耶穌基督的真理上他們還沒有成熟。還有很多事情他們還不懂，還有很多行為方面的他們還沒有作！為了表達這個意思保羅說：“弟兄們，我從前對你們說話，不能把你們當做屬靈的，只得把你們當做屬肉體、在基督里為嬰孩的”[《哥林多前書》3:1]。在此，“屬靈”和“屬肉體”是相對的。“屬靈”是好的，是屬於神的意思，是過基督徒該過的生活，時常與神交往，時常研讀神的話（《聖經》）的意思。
在哥林多前書第十四章，保羅勸那些基督徒說：“你們要追求愛，也要切慕屬靈的恩賜…”（哥林多前書14:1）。意思是他們要追求屬於神的恩賜，就是只有神可給的恩典。屬肉體的就是那些讓人越來越離開神的生活方式，包括過放蕩的生活、撒謊、怨天尤人等。但是過“屬靈”的日子，就是越來越親近神，過聖潔的日子，包括愛人、幫助人、榮耀神、接受神的恩典、遵守神的誡命、按照神的教導度日等。
“屬靈”就是屬於神的意思。在以弗所書里，保羅教導有關屬靈的生活；他說：“願頌讚歸於我們主耶穌基督的父神！他在基督里曾賜給我們天上各樣屬靈的福氣”（以弗所書1:3）。意思是所有屬於神的福氣、福分、禮物、恩賜、恩典等都是神所賜的，也是在耶穌基督裡面。在耶穌之外，並沒有這些福分！
懂得這些福氣、接受了這些恩典的人，就是“屬靈”的人（屬靈的基督徒）。屬靈的人要過屬靈的生活。難怪保羅又告訴以弗所的基督徒說：“所以你們要棄絕謊言，各人與鄰舍說實話… 從前偷竊的，不要再偷，總要勞力… 污穢的言語一句不可出口，只要隨事說造就人的好話，叫聽見的人得益處…”（請參看以弗所書4:17-32）。
有人問我，“你屬什麼？”時，我知道他的意思，但是我開開玩笑（也不完全開玩笑）說：“我屬神”。意思是我是神的兒女，我是基督徒。我也期待可以聽神說，“謝德華屬於我”。這個期待就是一個好動機，好心志，讓我過“屬靈”的生活。

What Does ‘Spiritual’ Mean?
What do we mean when we say, “Tom is spiritual, but James is not”? Or, “A spiritual Christian understands a certain Scripture, but a non-Christian has difficulty understanding it because she is not a spiritual person.” What does “spiritual” mean?
Part of the answer to this question comes from understanding that the Chinese term includes “having to do with,” “being connected to” or “being a part of.” For example, a wife is connected to her husband, or such-and-such a pen belongs to me, or “I was born in the year of the monkey.” Thus, Christians belong to—are a part of—are connected to Jesus Christ.
Paul wanted to impart spiritual gifts (Romans 1:11). In 1 Corinthians 3:1, Paul noted a difference between being spiritual (connected to the Spirit) and being carnal or worldly or of the flesh (connected to the desires of the flesh).
“Spiritual” therefore means having to do with God, belonging to God, being connected to God. All spiritual blessings are found only in Christ (Ephesians 1:3), and Christians can receive them. Our lives, however, must reflect such, as Paul makes clear in Ephesians 4:17-32.
When someone asks me “Ni shu shenme?” (Meaning “To which of the twelve animals in the Chinese zodiac do you belong?”) With a twinkle in my eye, I should answer, “Wo shu Shen.” (“I belong to God.”) More importantly, I hope someday to hear God say, “Edward Short belongs to me.”
